This is an exceptional Museum Quality African Zulu Red Married Woman's Hat from South Africa. This hat is called an Isicholo, and Zulu women wear wide hats like this one to proclaim their married status, which is symbolic of a woman's maturity and marital status. The hat is based on a hairstyle that married Zulu women wore in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Initially, Zulu women shaved their heads, leaving a tuft of hair that they covered with fat and ocher. Later they grew the tuft into a truncated cone and wove other materials into the hair, which was also treated with fat and ocher. In addition, the women wore headbands as a sign of respect for the adult men in their husband's family. By the turn of the century a woven hat, was still worn on special occasions. This hat has a circular basketry and colored using red ocher, an earthy mineral of iron mixed with clay and or sand, and animal fat.
This is a one of a kind museum quality Red Zulu woman's hat, that would be fabulous to add to your collection or home.
